- Prepare the Area: Ensure you have a clean, flat work area to operate in. Gather all necessary tools, which should include a compatible wrench for the spears, new O-rings if needed, and some lubricant for the seals.
- Depressurize the Keg: Safely depressurize the keg to avoid any accidents. This can typically be done by connecting the keg to your dispensing system and releasing the pressure or by manually activating the pressure relief valve.
- Remove the Type S Spear:
- Attach the wrench to the spear’s valve mechanism.
- Rotate the wrench counterclockwise to unscrew the spear. This might require some force, so be careful to apply steady pressure to avoid slipping.
- Once loose, carefully lift the spear out of the keg, ensuring that any residual beer or pressure is handled safely.

- Prepare the Type A Spear:
- Check the new Type A spear and replace any worn O-rings or seals. Apply a small amount of food-grade lubricant to the O-rings to ensure a good seal.
- Align the spear with the opening of the keg.

- Install the Type A Spear:
- Carefully insert the spear into the keg’s neck, making sure it is seated correctly.
- Once in place, use the wrench to screw the spear into the locking mechanism. Turn the wrench clockwise until the spear is securely fastened. Ensure it’s tight enough to prevent any leaks but not overtightened as this can damage the threads or seals.

- Check for Leaks:
- After the spear is installed, re-pressurize the keg slightly and apply soapy water around the spear area.
- Look for any bubbles that form, which would indicate a leak. If you see bubbles, depressurize the keg, adjust the spear, and check again.

- Connect to Dispensing System:
- Once you confirm there are no leaks, connect the keg to your dispensing system. Use the appropriate coupler for a Type A spear.
- Test the system by dispensing a small amount of beer to ensure everything is working correctly.
- Final Inspection:
- Do a final inspection to ensure there are no issues with the keg or the beer quality.
- Clean up your workspace and store any tools.
This detailed process should help you successfully replace a Type S keg spear with a Type A keg spear, using a wrench for the installation and removal. Always prioritize safety, especially when working with pressurized systems.
